*Monies are NOT being solicited, just participation/support! ;)

Here, right here in these United States ... families go hungry every single day. A reality I've seen firsthand since I began volunteering at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. One of many facilities, made possible by funding from Feeding America.

In lieu of my occasional "Mme.'s Give-Aways" ... I've partnered up with my fabulous gym Metro Fitness and another gracious private donor to provide a national (not distributed to a specific pantry) gift to FeedingAmerica.org

Rules: Through December 15, 2009 - Simply leave a comment below or email madamethejourney@gmail.com and your vote will be counted!

OBESE Lincoln University Student Mandates ...

I tweeted yesterday, "they're (schools, employers, insurers, government) going to make it as uncomfortable to live + work fat, as possible" ...

Bloggers + news circles have been abuzz with advocacy and distaste, over the graduation mandates of Lincoln University students (a historically black institution). A course requirement entitled, "Fitness for Life" implemented in 2006, for individuals with an "obese" body mass index rating.

"No student should ever be able to leave Lincoln and not know the risks of obesity. I see it as my professional responsibility to be honest and tell students they’re not healthy," said James L. DeBoy, Chair of Lincoln’s Health, Physical Education Department.

Graduation for the first round of students this mandate blankets, is quickly approaching. With only 1 more opportunity to take the class, there is an estimated 25 who have not fulfilled the credit or lost enough weight. Given, their BMI remains 30 or above ... they may not get their degree.

Opposing with her co-worker's statements, Dr. Yvonne Hilton; a professor in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation department at Lincoln chimes, "I don't necessarily agree with the BMI being a requirement. It is understood that obesity in America is growing fast, but maybe there should have been a different approach in informing the students about their health and building their awareness."

Personal Thoughts ...

1. I am anticipating this news will be a likely deterrent for prospective heavier students. Not directly, but should you be a HS senior, who happens to be overweight ... Lincoln University will plausibly NOT be on your list of potentials. I'm curious to know if this is the underling intention of the school?

2. The stigma that comes with being big as it is, added, everyone's consciousness that school officials are watching your weight too - could be emotionally detrimental. Especially, in a socially-crazed environment, like a college campus. An arena where some are being introduced to adulthood and are the most fragile amidst "finding themselves".

3. If any demographic knows of disparities and discrimination in America, it's blacks. Once turned away from education for our appearance ... it seems to be subtly happening again - although, imposed from within. My mom disagreed with me and told me it's better that we are realistic, expect more and are harder on ourselves. She's from the old school, but I get what she's saying. You know the, we have to study longer, run harder, jump higher ... to be accepted. The unspoken "black rule".

4. I see this as a trend, that's only going to grow at all opportunities. I work for a fortune 500 company, who is falling in line with a plethora of private sector firms being bombarded with increased obesity-related medical costs; taking penalty measures to the overweight. We have "voluntary" wellness programs, but should you not volunteer, you'll notice your paycheck is a tinge lighter effective 2010 - due to new "associate health and productivity fees". Let's not forget, the proposed "fat" taxes, on insured obese Americans. We're grown, I guess we can handle those consequences ... But, is trickling down to college students going too far? Who's next ... our high schoolers?

I supposed my main offense to this, is people are being forced to lose weight. A force that threatens livelihoods; making you pay more, or in this case, not allowing you to receive those credentials you've spent years applying yourself to acquire. I feel it takes away from the experience of willingness, the beauty of a personal decision, and integral effort. Fear moves people, but it does not always inspire, shouldn't that be the purpose?

I am an advocate for weight loss, and better health. I commend there are classes that address the epidemic of obesity, and it's disproportionate rates in the black community. It's fact, heart disease, diabetes and other preventable ailments, are killing us! But I'm with others, when I say - make it a requirement for ALL STUDENTS, if you're in fact concerned on how lifestyles/physical appearance translate into the post-collegiate world. ~PC

Legendary Plus-Sized Rapper MIA-X, Makes A Comeback!

Remember back in the day, when you had to pick sides? Jay or Nas, Pac or Biggie, Ruff Ryders or Roc-a-Fella ... Cashmoney or No Limit? Well maybe, that was my just hood ... lol. I chose Cashmoney, but stayed infatuated with the rap stylings of MIA-X aka The Unladylike Diva bka Mama Mia under the NL brand.

She had this power, and ferocious swag for a female MC, and a thick one at that. She totally held her own, and emitted confidence that I could only dream of in my teenies. Well she's reminiscing, sharing with DX HIP-Hop the unfortunate tragedies and circumstances that occurred, halting her career and what's to come ... ~PC

Kim Kardashian Weight Loss - Thanks, QuickTrim® .::yawn::.

From fearlessly defending her unphotoshopped curvy-figure (and cellulite) this past April in Life & Style mag, Kim K is singing a new tune. Posting a a much thinner pic (right) via twitter this week, she chimes: "I finally feel I've reached my goal!"

No specific measurements or pounds were stated. But, like sister Khloe K's recent weight transformation, she too is attributing her slimmer figure to QuickTrim®.

“Quick Trim DOES A BODY GOOD!” Kim tweeted. “Don’t kill me @NickSaglimbeni 4 posting snapshots of our shoot, they aren’t photoshopped yet, but who needs it! Quick Trim baby! Go get it!”

A Kardashian-sponsored weight loss supplement system with the usual suspects; a diuretic + laxative-laced cleanser, heavily caffeinated burn pill ... and a gel that targets cellulite. Spare me.

While I've come to expect most who boast thickness to lose it thereafter, that's definitely not my problem. Rather, instead of revealing her workout regimen or change in diet - her lovely sheep are likely to believe they too can have rock hard abs ... thanks to drugs, a glass a water and about $60.00 for the 2 week system, alone. Spare me, again.~PC

Heidi Klum to LOSE + Mya LOST, Leona Lewis GAINed then Lost ...

In small people weight loss news ...

5 weeks post-baby, Project Runway moderator and supermodel Heidi Klum, tells People after last week's Victoria's Secret fashion show: "I'm definitely one of the heaviest of the bunch of the 30 girls in the show. And I still have 20 lbs. to go." source

Dancing with the Stars finalist & 90's R&B crooner (I used to vibe hard to some Mya in middle school! ♪I'm moving on, ooon ... ooon♪ ... lol) reveals, to OK! she's shed 11lbs total and a dress size, since embarking on the rigorous dance, training schedule. "I am back at 127 [pounds] ... I've gained muscle from dancing." source

Unsettling to her label, songstress Leona Lewis had put on 13 pounds (and has reportedly removed said pounds at their pressure). A gain attributed to yes, the U.S.A. diet, while she chilled in the states working on her new album. "American portions are so big it was hard not to put on weight and Leona loves every kind of food that's bad for you." says a rep. source

So Heidi, sit down ... Mya, how could you not lose weight and gain muscle on that show? ... lol, umm Leona, poor thing ... on behalf of America, I apologize.

Health Care REFORM: OBESITY Initiatives ...

Just highlighting a few provisions in the nearly 2,000 page health care reform bill, that acknowledges the $147B costly epidemic of obesity. The bill that squeaked by congress and who's fate stands in the hands of ... an already vocally-reluctant Senate.

"To provide affordable, quality health care for all Americans and reduce the growth in health care spending, and for other purposes."

One consistent theme I discovered while skimming through the legislation (yes, I skimmed - I'm not an elected official ... lol) was a predominant focus on prevention. From private sector employer initiatives of health literacy, to funding being afforded to local, evidence-based programming.

{Sec. 2535} Community-based overweight and obesity prevention programs. pg. 1,457

Also the slashing of simple "mental" health care verbiage, being replaced by "behavioral". Seemingly, adding those dealing with obesity to the umbrella of mental illness, and treating such, in addition to diet/exercise methods.

{Sec. 2522} Mental and behavioral health training. pg. 1,381

Oh, and this one, I got a few chuckles out of. A requirement of chain restaurants and vending machine operators to visually post caloric values of items. There have been numerous studies that prove, this measure has little effect. I think the concensus is that we know when something is high in calories, why annoy us by reminding us? lol ... But I'm impartial to it's execution ... it may help? .::Kanye shrug::.

{Sec. 2572} Nutrition labeling of standard menu items at chain restaurants and of articles of food sold from vending machines. pg. 1,510

Tonight will mark the next step in our nation's quest for health care reform, whether passed for debate ... or filibustered. The bill may not even resemble it's arrival state once completed, but it would be a relief to retain the above proposals.

Again, however ... I'm a true believer that health care reform, can only prove to be effective, should we first embrace SELF-Care reform. ~PC

'Precious' Gabby Sidibe on 40lb Weight Loss and Self-LOVE ...

It's fact, if you're big and in the spotlight, your weight will shine too. But this young lady's image of self, is refreshing.

As reported by entertainment columnist Jawn Murray, Gabourey 'Gabby' Sidibe, the rising star of "Precious" is seemingly following in the footsteps of co-stars Sherri Shepherd, and Mo'nique by losing 40 pounds. She explains:

"I've been very busy with new projects and the success of the film. I am eating healthier when I can and staying active, but it's not my goal to become skinny. I love the way I look. I've never been ashamed." she recently told a red carpet interviewer.

She sat down with by NYMag.com this past September revealing, “I still hear it from people who don’t know that they’re pretty close to hurting my feelings. People who care about me, like this one friend. I was eating a light potato chip, and she eyeballed me like I was the most disgusting thing she’d ever seen...

But at some point, I learned to love myself, because I sleep with myself every night and I wake up with myself every morning, and if I don’t like myself, there’s no reason to even live the life. I love the way I look. I’m fine with it. And if my body changes, I’ll be fine with that too."

Some questioned whether she'd be sought after for future roles, because of her 300+lb / non-"hollywood" figure. But, fear not ... her riveting performance and talent has her test-piloting a show for Lifetime called the "The C Word", and finishing up another indie film directed by Don Cheadle, "Yelling at the Sky".

Do your thing girl ... continued better health, and success! The movie hasn't come to my city yet, but I greatly anticipate seeing it! ~PC

No to the PLATEAU! + My Non-Supplement DETOX (re-post) ...

Over the past few months, my weight (which I stopped micro-managing) has maintained. Now to some this is disheartening, but looking at the wider spectrum of the situation ... I'm okay. This is a far cry from my earlier mindset, on this journey. If the scale didn't move, I stopped moving! I'm not putting in not nare bit off effort ... when I can't see the "results". Thank goodness, that's the old PC!

"When you hike in the mountains there are times when you’re climbing, and then there are times when things level off. It’s important to use those plateau periods to regain momentum, to rest, to enjoy the view, and to acknowledge how far you’ve already come." ~ Michelle Fiordaliso, Certified Nutrional Consultant

While I'm happy with the better (still learning and growing) lifestyle I lead ... I'm still a nice leap from where I think I should be ... I've spent enough time in the maintenance zone and I'm ready to shake lose! As some know, I'm not much of drastic gal ...lol ... let's be honest, I'm boring (no shame) I love my patterns and normalcies ... but now is the time to make a few changes - to start, this week I plan to:
  1. eat more, and shift calories (again)
  2. adopting more versatile methods of activity ... increasing effort, and hitting that weight room <-(again, lol)
Also, I was emailed about my thoughts on detoxing, and alternatives to paying Jillian or some other pill manufacturer to sell you a trendy laxative.(I mean that's all it is ... lol). So, below is an excerpt from a post I did a while back. Detoxing was also instrumental in me breaking my last plat, actually:

"Detox": I will be endeavoring into a natural detox regimen for the next 9 days. Yes, I'm briefly going back to my Fat Smash roots to cleanse and detoxify. I've discovered that some of the best detoxes involve FOOD, the right ones. Days of STARVING on the Master Cleanse or other liquid plans are just not for me.

While my diet has been "okay" ... I still found myself eating many processed/packaged foods and not nearly enough veggies and natural items ... so this major measure will help me to become more comfortable with introducing both elements into my diet. Following this plan also makes me have to cook and or prepare my meals personally to monitor the ingredients. Oh, and no meat!

Allowed: No processed foods, preferably organic. Fruits, Veggies, Whole Grains, Brown Rice, Egg Whites, Legumes, Light Yogurt & Milk Products, Healthy Oils (Safflower, Olive, etc.) ... and unlimited seasonings. Plenty of water as well!

Products include pedometers, fit-friendly MP3 players, yoga accessories, scales, blood pressure monitors, treadmills, stationary bikes and elliptical machines. If you are not near one of the 40 ... items are also available online at BestBuy.com

Considering the influx of new and resolution-ary diet / lifestyle changers ... anticipated on January 1, 2010 ... it makes sense. I've also seen commercials where Best Buy has implemented lay-away programs ... I still think "lay-away" is a friendly term for "ransom w/ interest" ... lol ~PC

There's something gravely wrong in this world when your shoe advertisement is flagged 'unsuitable for minors' Reebok ... lol! BET's Heart of the City: "Dying to Eat in Jackson, Mississippi"

Update: Promo Vid Posted via BET on Nov. 9th

Following, "Heart of the City" Detroit: Dropped Out, and Chicago: War on Violence ... this documentary is geared to address another bane in predominately black areas - poor health and obesity. Dangerous epidemics said to be "killing us faster than violence ever could", per the special's star, and seemingly (public weight loss) figure, Star Jones.

Mississippi (Jackson), being the spotlight of the installment, holds the #1 spot in adult obesity rates. Exploring generational patterns, educational trends, healthy lifestyle accessibility (i.e. easier to obtain fast food, than it is superior nutrition) and other relative factors - to present measures that potentially could serve as a balm.

The show is concluding filming and being productively finalized, scheduled to air next Sunday, November 15, 2009 10:00pm EST on BET. This may be worth turning my TV to BET, which trust me ... is a rarity ... lol ...~PC
